Medicare offers comprehensive coverage for many healthcare services, there are several expenses and services that are not covered or only partially covered. Here are some examples:

Long-Term Care

Medicare generally does not cover long-term care services, including assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating, provided in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or at home.

Routine Dental Care:

Medicare does not cover most routine dental services, such as cleanings, fillings, extractions, dentures, or dental plates. Some exceptions may apply in specific situations, such as dental services required in preparation for certain covered procedures.

Routine Vision Care

Medicare typically does not cover routine eye exams, eyeglasses, or contact lenses. However, it may cover certain eye exams or surgeries related to specific medical conditions, such as cataracts or glaucoma.

Hearing Aids

Medicare does not cover the cost of hearing aids or routine hearing exams. However, it may cover diagnostic hearing tests if ordered by a doctor.

Cosmetic Procedures:

Medicare generally does not cover cosmetic surgeries or procedures that are performed solely for aesthetic purposes.

Prescription drugs (Part D coverage gap)

While Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage, there is a coverage gap (also known as the “donut hole”) during which beneficiaries may have to pay a larger share of their prescription drug costs until they reach catastrophic coverage. However, efforts have been made to close this gap gradually.

Certain Services Received Abroad:

In most cases, Medicare does not cover medical services or supplies received outside the United States, with limited exceptions for emergency situations or specific circumstances.
It’s important to note that while Medicare has these limitations, beneficiaries may have the option to enroll in supplemental insurance plans (Medigap) or Medicare Advantage plans, which can provide additional coverage for some of these services. It’s advisable to review the specific details of your Medicare plan or consult with a Medicare representative for more accurate and up-to-date information based on your individual circumstances.
